The Center for the Advancement of Stem Education, headquartered at Garrett College, was established in June 2006 with funding from the U.S. Department of Defense.  The primary purpose for the Center is to add more professional engineers and scientists to the workforce by stimulating science and technology interest in middle and high school students nationwide.  Its creation was in response to the recognition of a profound challenge:  To remain internationally competitive, the U.S. needs to produce more scientists and engineers.

The Cumberland Times-News is the daily regional newspaper, and the Garrett County Weekender is the Friday edition for the Garrett County region. The staff at the Garrett Information Enterprise Center branch office can custom design advertisements and help with circulation in the dealer and home delivery area. Employees are happy to help local businesses get their information out to the public. Future projects include online advertising and online subscriptions.  The Weekender welcomes Press Releases about upcoming community and civic events.

Garrett College launched the Garrett Rural Information Cooperative (GRIC) in 1994, when the county had no local dial-up access to the Internet. Also known as GCNET, GRIC is a private nonprofit cooperative serving the citizens of Western Maryland and surrounding areas. Before GRIC was formed, local users were paying long distance charges to reach Internet Service Providers. Garrett College's strategy was to aggregate community-wide private and public sector use, keep the user fees affordable, and recycle fees back into the system to support ongoing maintenance and development. The local access provided to the community is vital to the growth and development of the area.

The telecommunications system was purchased and installed in 1995, with service beginning in 1996. Garrett College initially owned and operated the telecommunications provider, but soon privatized the systems as a 501 (c) (12) cooperative, with its own governing board. Currently there are 15 board members who manage the business and affairs of the Cooperative.

Hawkeye, based in Seattle, opened an Eastern US sales and support office at the GIEC. Hawkeye is a "channel marketing" company providing services to companies such as Microsoft and Hewlett Packard. These companies sell a variety of their products through resellers such as Best Buy, Circuit City and Wal-Mart. Hawkeye develops programs to "push" the vendors through the retail sales channel, allowing the manufacturer to concentrate on product development and support. For example, HP would contract with Hawkeye to develop a point of sale program featuring signage, price promotions, sales person incentives, web marketing/database programs or other items to push HP printers through one or more retailers, either regionally or nationally. The manufacturers outsource their retail marketing programs to companies such as Hawkeye because it is more cost effective, and quickly modified if needed.

Lakeside Architecture, Inc. was established in early 2002 to provide comprehensive Architectual Design Services to area clients. Since its conception, Lakeside Architecture has provided continuous design excellence to the Western Maryland region, with a committed focus to the Deep Creek Lake area. In July 2004, Lakeside Architecture opened a branch office in Morgantown, WV operating as LAI, Inc. to serve WV's growing architecture. The branch studio is committed to the development of urban architectural conditions that are surrounding a growing and thriving city with an international presence due to the outreach of West Virginia University. LAI is becoming a force in high-end residential architecture in some of the prestigious living communities surrounding Morgantown. The firm as a whole employs a staff of ten with additional consulting engineers available as projects deem necessary. The staff is currently a vital part of the growth and development of our local and surrounding areas. The Center for the Advancement of Stem Education will meet this challenge by creating innovative teacher training programs that will immerse the teachers and students in activities associated with inquiry and design-based learning that supplements the normal science curriculum.  The Center’s main goal will be to stimulate an interest in and a heightened awareness of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics so that our children—our future—will be prepared for the new millennium. Efforts by the Center will begin in Maryland and expand to include the rest of the nation.
