The Center for the Advancement of Stem Education, headquartered at Garrett College, was established in June 2006 with funding from the U.S. Department of Defense.  The primary purpose for the Center is to add more professional engineers and scientists to the workforce by stimulating science and technology interest in middle and high school students nationwide.  Its creation was in response to the recognition of a profound challenge:  To remain internationally competitive, the U.S. needs to produce more scientists and engineers. 

The Center for the Advancement of Stem Education will meet this challenge by creating innovative teacher training programs that will immerse the teachers and students in activities associated with inquiry and design-based learning that supplements the normal science curriculum.  The Center’s main goal will be to stimulate an interest in and a heightened awareness of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics so that our children—our future—will be prepared for the new millennium. Efforts by the Center will begin in Maryland and expand to include the rest of the nation.
